A new Bedfordshire Police operation has been targeting ‘throw overs’ and other illegal activity at Bedford Prison.

As well as more patrols at key times around the prison perimeter, Bedfordshire Police’s Community Team have begun working more closely with prison officer colleagues and other agencies to crackdown on the smuggling of contraband items to prisoners.

Their main aim is to deter things like drugs and phones being thrown over the fence.

Sergeant Ian Leeson, who is leading the operation, said: “We know that the amount of contraband going into prisons increases in the lead up to Christmas, which is why we [have] stepped up our patrols…

“We are committed to working with our partners such as the prisons services to get a grip on the organised crime that goes on behind bars.

“Those on the outside doing the throw overs and smuggling have been warned: stop what you are doing, otherwise you could find yourselves spending even more time with your mates inside.”

Those who take in prohibited items could face their own prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Anyone with any information about this activity is asked to contact Bedfordshire Police through their online reporting centre or by calling 101.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
