Bedfordshire Police says it has stepped up its crackdown on gun, gang and drug crime, with 23 arrests made so far this month by its specialist Boson unit, including a “handful” in Bedford.

The force said officers from Boson, its dedicated guns and gangs team, have charged 10 people with a range of firearms and drugs offences during operations carried out across the county over the last three weeks.

Police also recovered six firearms, around £10,000 in cash and drugs with an estimated street value of around £50,000 during the enforcement activity.

A police spokesperson said the arrests were “mainly in Luton with a handful in Bedford”.

Crackdown continues

Detective inspector Jon Wheeler said the force would continue taking “robust action” against organised criminal activity.

“We will not tolerate firearms, drugs, or violent behaviour on our streets, and we’ll continue to take robust action against those who pose a threat to public safety,” he said.

“In the last three weeks, we’ve stepped up our fight against those involved in such criminality, with a total of 23 arrests so far in May.

“Our officers have also been out carrying out proactive patrols this week as part of Sceptre, the anti-knife crime awareness week, providing both deterrence to those who look to cause harm, and reassurance to the community.”

Public support

Police said intelligence from the public remains an important part of tackling organised crime and violence across Bedfordshire.

“Support from the public is crucial in helping us tackle firearms and drugs criminality and associated violence,” added DI Wheeler.

“Please tell us about any concerns or information you may have. All information helps us build an intelligence picture around what is happening in an area so we can then take the necessary action to help keep everyone safe.”

Anyone with concerns or information can report it through the Bedfordshire Police website.
