The Medieval Map Mosaic near Bedford’s Castle Mound has been damaged leaving a gaping hole and broken tiles strewn across the area.
Residents informed the Bedford Independent of the damage, concerned it was the result of vandalism.
However, with the recent freezing temperatures, there is also speculation it could be winter weather that has damaged the mosaic.
A Borough Council spokesperson said: “We are investigating this matter and urge anyone with information to contact the Police on 101 while we will be carrying out work to repair the damage.”
Bedfordshire Police say if the council believe it is vandalism they’ll support the council in their investigations.
