This week sees the long-awaited full opening of Wells & Co’s state-of-the-art Brewpoint and that’s not the only cause for celebration as the pub company scooped three wins at the globally recognised Craft Beer Marketing Awards.

The Craft Beer Marketing Awards are a chance for breweries from across the world to enter their top work, recognising and awarding the very best marketing in the brewing industry.

‘Crushies’ are awarded to the winners of each category, and Wells & Co. walked away with two UK awards as well as a global award for its new logo.

They earned a Gold Crushie in the UK’s Best Can Design category for On Point Pale Ale and a Platinum Crushie in the UK’s Best Unique Logo Design category for the Brewpoint logo.

They were also global winners for the Brewpoint logo, in the Best Unique Logo Design category.

The award-winning logo, created by designer Carli Pfurtscheller, was designed to tell the story behind the Wells & Co brand, looking back over five generations of the Wells family brewing in Bedfordshire, and incorporating the company’s original nautical starfish symbol as a nod to its heritage and history.

Managing Director of Wells & Co, Peter Wells, said: “The first time we saw the new logo for Brewpoint, it was one of those moments where something just hits the nail on the head.

“We knew we had something special that nodded to our heritage and history that we could happily use for years to come.”

The award-win has been all the more special for the business, as the designs were very much a Bedford community effort, which saw the Brewpoint team collaborating with local artistic talent to bring its new home and brews to life.

Back in 2019, Wells & Co. gave students at Bedford College a professional brief to develop creative ideas for the logo and branding. Carli Pfurtscheller, who was then in her final year of the degree course, came up with the chosen Brewpoint design.

It was then developed further in-house with ex-Bedford College student, Marcus Finch, to take the brand forward and finalise the overall designs.

In 2020 she continued working Wells & Co. to create the On Point Ale can design.

“I was delighted to hear that Brewpoint had received these awards,” said Carli, who has been running her own design business since graduating two years ago.

“It’s amazing to be globally recognised for my designs which include the Brewpoint logo and the packaging designs for the core range of beers ‘On Point,’ ‘Checkpoint’ and ‘Nil Point.

“I think it goes to show that you don’t have to be an established design agency to produce award-winning creative work. It’s a great success story for the town and an inspiration for the next crop of design students graduating from Bedford College.”

Tom Foddy, Wells & Co’s head of sales and marketing, said that they had wanted to create a brand and beers that were instantly recognisable to their customers, focusing on the simplicity of the names and designs to make sure each had “great standout”.

“These accolades are all the sweeter to receive in reflection of the hard work that went into creating Brewpoint over the past three years.”
