Local people heading to the Barkers Lane tip must register their vehicles online before arriving, as a new automated system goes live this Thursday (1 October).
Bedford Borough Council has launched the free digital portal to replace the old permit system, which could previously take up to 10 working days to approve for certain waste types.

The new online registration takes just a few minutes and is valid immediately. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at the entrance will now check every vehicle as it arrives at the gates.
Bedfordians can register up to two vehicles per home address. Cars and pickups are approved for 24 months, vans for six months, and hire vehicles for a single-day registration.
Stopping tip misuse
The council is introducing the measure to stop trade waste abusers and people living outside the borough from using the facility, which drives up costs for local taxpayers.
Portfolio holder for environment, Cllr Nicky Gribble (Independent, Renhold & Ravensden), said: “This new system is about protecting the HWRC for the people who pay for it, Bedford Borough residents.
“Too many businesses and people from outside the borough have been using our facility, pushing up costs for local taxpayers. The new registration system is quick, easy and immediate.
“Residents will be able to register in just a few minutes and visit straight away.
“We want to reassure residents that this is not about making responsible disposal harder – it’s about making sure the service remains free, safe and available for local households.”
Grace period rules

During the first month, site staff will be on hand to help anyone who arrives without registering.
Those individuals will still be allowed to drop off their waste but will receive clear instructions on how to register for their next visit.
However, strict rules regarding vehicle types and commercial waste remain in force from day one. Box vans, tipper vehicles, twin-axle trailers, and anyone carrying trade waste will be turned away.
Local people are advised to bring proof of their Bedford Borough address on every visit. Anyone who is less confident using the internet can contact council customer services for support with the digital process.
