When Lauren Troiano found herself on maternity leave, juggling a newborn and an uncertain career path, she didn’t expect to end up creating one of Bedford’s fastest-growing networks for female entrepreneurs.
But that’s exactly what happened.
What started as a few marketing favours for friends soon turned into The Little Marketing Company, a freelance business offering hands-on marketing support to small businesses.
“I just wanted something flexible, something that worked around my son and family life,” Lauren says.
Her first client was her nail technician, who swapped services with her for some marketing help. “From there, word of mouth took off, and suddenly, I had a business.”
Building a community
Lauren’s work is more than just marketing; it’s a connection.
She realised that small business owners are often overwhelmed. “Marketing is usually the first thing to slip down the list,” she explains. “I want to be that extra pair of hands or just a friendly voice to give them a boost.”
But Lauren’s story isn’t just about business, it’s about building a community.
In early 2025, she launched the Female Founders Club to bring together women entrepreneurs who often find themselves isolated. “After leaving office life and going freelance, I felt lonely.
“I wanted a space where we could just be together, share stories, and support each other.”
What started as a small Instagram group quickly grew into a vibrant community with hundreds of members, monthly meet-ups, and a real buzz. “It’s not about profit for me,” Lauren says. “It’s about creating support, friendship, and lifting each other up.”
Facing challenges head-on
Of course, Lauren’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Being pushed out of her previous job after having a child was a tough wake-up call.
“I don’t know a man who’s been pushed out because they’ve had a child,” she says bluntly. “It made me realise how much still needs to change.”
She has also encountered the usual hurdles that female founders face. “Sometimes, I’m in a room full of male founders, and they assume I’m there for admin. There’s still that battle to be taken seriously.”
Lauren admits imposter syndrome can creep in, but leaning on other local female entrepreneurs has helped her push through.
Juggling business, motherhood, and life
Balancing motherhood, a freelance business, and a social life isn’t easy either. “I could work 24/7 if I let myself,” she laughs.
“I’ve had to learn to switch off, sometimes that means taking off my Apple Watch at night, putting down my phone, and doing something simple like colouring or cross-stitching to reset.”
She also makes time for running and podcasts, and prioritises family. “Burnout’s real, so I watch for the signs and remind myself to say no.”
Despite the ups and downs, Lauren says the Bedford business scene has been surprisingly welcoming. “People really support each other here.
They share posts, collaborate, and genuinely want to help. I was so scared to go freelance, but I’ve met amazing people.”
Looking ahead and advice
Looking ahead, Lauren aims to continue growing the Female Founders Club, hosting more workshops, and supporting her clients as they build their businesses. She’s already planning a bigger campaign for International Women’s Day 2025.
When asked what advice she’d give other women thinking about starting a business, Lauren had a strong answer: “Just do it. Honestly, just start.
There’s never a perfect time.” She also recommends starting small, “If you can, begin as a side hustle while you’re still employed. It lets you grow confidence and reduce risks before you take the leap.”
