Bedford Town progressed in the Bedfordshire FA Senior Cup on Tuesday night (29 October), beating fellow Southern League Premier Central side, Biggleswade Town 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw at The Eyrie.

Junior Gyamfi slotted home the decisive penalty to ensure the Eagles’ progress to the next round.

Bedford Town and Biggleswade Town have started life in step three with contrasting fortunes; Lee Bircham’s men are in sixth place after a run of four victories momentarily saw them top the division.

Biggleswade Town meanwhile are bottom of the pile, with just one league victory from 12 games.

The two sides could not be separated on Tuesday night however, with the game going straight to penalties after a 0-0 deadlock.

Both managers named strong elevens, but it was a game of few chances; Carl Mensah coming closest for Bedford Town after 15 minutes as his shot was cleared off the line.

The most entertaining moments of the first half were arguably towards the end, when a player from each side was shown a yellow card after a midfield fracas, but both sides still went into the break goalless.

Visitors hit the woodwork

Eddie Panter went close for the visitors in the opening throws of the second period, before Liam Andrews’ effort hit the post in what was the nearest anyone got to opening the scoring in ninety minutes.

Late efforts from Dejon Noel-Williams and Gyamfi were kept out, before the latter went on to score the decisive penalty with the mist descending over The Eyrie to take the Eagles through.
