Two car parks in Bedford town centre will reopen on 15 June, with Government guidance allowing ‘non-essential’ shops to open on the same day.

River Street multi-storey car park and the Harpur Centre car park will join others that have remained open during the lockdown for essential journeys.

These include:

  • Queen Street multi-storey
  • Riverside
  • St Mary’s Gardens
  • St Peter’s
  • Duckmill Lane
  • Ashburnham Road
  • Prebend Street
  • Melbourne Street

While their car park has remained closed the Harpur Centre has remained open for essential services.

They’ll now implement new measures safety measures, set out on the Government’s Safer Public Places document, for visitors and employees.

Samantha Laycock, Harpur Centre Manager, said, “Our Centre teams have been working extremely hard under huge pressure, and we are immensely grateful to them, but we know we cannot do this alone.

“Everyone who visits our Centre will play a part in keeping themselves and others safe by following the official guidelines, instructions and information provided by our teams.”

Bedford Borough Council has also increased cleaning and added social distancing measure at markets.

They’ll also be placing signage, floor markers and banners reminding people to socially distance.

Car parks will re-open with normal opening hours and charges in place.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
