Tomorrow (24 August) marks Ukrainian Independence Day and Bedford is helping local Ukrainians who have adopted Bedford as their home to celebrate.
All Bedfordians are invited to celebrate the country’s main state holiday and heritage of independence and freedom at a Harpur Square event from 4pm this Wednesday.
As well as attending the event, you can show your support by donating an old bike to the Bikes for Ukrainians Scheme or sharing a photo of a sunflower via social media with the hashtag #SunflowersForUkraine.

Later in the evening, Bedford’s Corn exchange and bridges will light up blue and yellow to show solidarity for the town’s Ukrainian community.
This includes families who have adopted Bedford as a temporary home after Russia invaded their country in February.

Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, invited all residents to #StandWithUkraine at the gathering that runs until 9pm in the Harpur Suite.
The Mayor said: “Our thoughts are with those who have lost friends, family and loved ones, as well as those still living through the conflict.
“Through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, we’re providing support to Ukrainian nationals and we’d like to thank the residents who have offered accommodation, support and friendship to those during these incredibly difficult times.”
