As the clocks go back and the darker months begin, two Bedford performance teachers are encouraging people of all ages to beat the winter blues by singing and dancing their way to better mental health.

Ahead of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month in November, Flo Rowntree and Mea-Ellease Goodwin, co-founders of Capricorn Performing Arts and Capella Entertainment, are urging people of all ages to experience the benefits of movement, music and community.

The call comes after the success of a wellbeing dance workshop for staff at Biddenham International School and Sports College to mark World Mental Health Day.

“Over the last year or so, many more studies carried out by universities, arts organisations and research bodies here in the UK have confirmed that singing and dancing are exceptionally good for you,” said Flo Rowntree.

“These studies have found that activities such as singing and dancing are powerful interventions for reducing stress, anxiety, isolation and low self-esteem.

Confidence, connection and creativity

They make you fitter, more resilient and happier. Dance is brilliant for the brain because it improves coordination and boosts dopamine and endorphins, especially when dancing with other people.

“Singing is excellent for improved breathing and can lift your mood; singing as part of a group builds a valuable social connection with others too.”

Flo and Mea-Ellease launched Capricorn Performing Arts in 2024 to create an inclusive space where anyone, of any age or experience level, can explore performance skills.

Based on musical theatre training, their workshops combine singing, dancing and acting – all designed to boost confidence, encourage creativity and build new friendships.

Blokes should try it out

“It can be very daunting to join a singing or dancing class at first,” said Mea-Ellease Goodwin. “It’s definitely way out of many people’s comfort zones, but taking the first step can be the biggest leap into improving happiness, health and wellbeing.

“No one takes things too seriously – it’s all about giving it a go, enjoying the moment, having a laugh, achieving something you didn’t know you could do when you started and, above all, coming out feeling lighter and happier.”

Mark, who attends Capricorn’s Two Left Feet beginner dance class and Show Choir, said: “I had no previous experience, but my wife attends both groups and persuaded me to go along with her. Everyone is so friendly.

Beating the winter blues

“We sang and performed some of our basic party dance routines at BedFringe this year, which was a laugh and something I would never have felt comfortable with before coming to these workshops. I’m pleased I started and would encourage more blokes to try it out too.”

As daylight hours shorten, lower mood and fatigue can become common. Flo said: “Now is the time to start singing or dancing – or both. Find a local dance class or singing group; there are plenty of choirs and dance opportunities across Bedford and the surrounding areas.

“Many, like Capricorn, offer free trials for children and adults. Get in touch with these organisations and give them a go.”
