Local fishmonger, George Hooper, has been crowned Craft Fishmonger at this year’s Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS) Awards.

23-year-old George is the procurement director at GCH Fishmongers, the family-owned independent shop on Newnham Street.

George has been involved in the seafood industry from a young age and is the youngest ever winner of the British Fishcraft Championships Craftsman Completion which he won in 2015 at just 19.

“It’s an honour to receive this recognition,” said George.

“I’m proud to be an ambassador for the industry and to bring another award to our shop which celebrates its fourth birthday this July.”

To become an MFS Craft Fishmonger, George had to demonstrate skill and experience in the art of preparing a range of fish and shellfish products to an excellent standard.

Excellent hygiene standards are necessary, pride in appearance and sharing their skills with others in the industry are also key.

GCH Fishmongers are taking part in the Town Centre Champions’ week-long Fiver Fest event which starts on Saturday 8 June.  They have put together five £5 offers, with more details here.

The perfect excuse to pop in and congratulate George.
