A Bedford School upper sixth form student will find out tonight (25 March) whether he is the latest winner of a prestigious award that celebrates the contributions made by pupil librarians across the UK after being nominated by one of his teachers.
Alex Lamb, in his final year at Bedford School, has been described as “selfless” and has an, “empathetic eye to spot when a pupil may need additional assistance” and vies to be the 12th winner of the Pupil Library Assistant of the Year.

The awards are organised by the School Libraries Group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP SLG) and the School Library Association (SLA).
Nominated by the School’s Library and Information Manager, Miss Chatley, Alex was noted for demonstrating excellence in various areas, including serving as a role model to other students, with entries judged by a panel from the world of children’s books and the library community.
“Alex’s approach to his senior pupil librarian role has been one in which he is selfless with his time, bringing a happy disposition into the library and engaging in discussion around library processes with his own considered ideas.
“Alex is diligent and attentive, both of which have been vital attributes in learning new skills and working in a busy environment. Despite Alex’s demonstrated competencies, he has always remained a humble and gracious individual.
“I am elated that Alex has been selected as a finalist for the award!”
A calm space
“I was shocked and surprised that I’d made it but was very happy!”, said Alex on learning of his nomination.
“Helping to ensure that the library runs smoothly so that everyone can get the most out of it has been my favourite part of being a student librarian.
“The whole library team have been very helpful, especially Mrs Shirley, who is always there to answer my questions.
“The library is a calm space where I can work or relax and read away from the bustle of school life, as well as being a place for research and enjoying a wide range of books.”
The winners will be announced by children’s author and comedian, Russell Kane, at an awards ceremony hosted by Pearson in London.
