The Headmaster at Bedford School has described the official opening of its first international school and the first British International girls’ school in Northern India as “a moment of immense pride”.
James Hodgson was commenting on the launch of Bedford School Mohali, located on the outskirts of Chandigarh, which opened its doors on 9 April, less than a year after Bedford School announced the project at a grand signing ceremony last Spring.
Witnessing the announcement in April 2025 was Old Bedfordian and former England cricketer Sir Alistair Cook, alongside distinguished guests including His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Susan Lousada and the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Camilla King.

“Pride for our whole community”
The new school was developed in partnership with Doon International Education Society, and features modern classrooms, advanced science and technology laboratories, extensive sports facilities, creative arts spaces, STEAM laboratories and a 1,000-seat auditorium.
Mr Hodgson, Headmaster of Bedford School, said: “The opening of Bedford School Mohali is a moment of immense pride for our whole community.
“We are thrilled to see our ethos and values come to life in India, in a school dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women.
“Guided by our core values of endeavour, curiosity, responsibility and integrity, all underpinned by kindness, Bedford School Mohali will nurture girls who are ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.”
The school is led by its Founding Principal, Naomi Atkins, who said it was an honour to welcome the first pupils through the school’s doors.
“From the very beginning, our vision has been to create a vibrant, inclusive and aspirational community where every girl is supported to thrive academically and personally,” she said.
“This week marks the start of an exciting journey, not only for our pupils and families, but for girls’ education in India more broadly.”
