A Bedford man in his 80s is supporting an extraordinary cycling challenge this August in memory of his wife Jenny, who died from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in December 2023.
Pat Wheeler, a lifelong cycling enthusiast, is helping organise and support a team of eight friends, many in their 60s and some new to cycling, as they embark on a 900-mile ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
The group is hoping to raise vital funds for the Bedfordshire MND Group, which helped Pat and Jenny throughout her illness.
Though Pat won’t be cycling the full route, he’ll follow the team in a dedicated support vehicle, ready to step in for any rider who needs a break.
The car has been transformed with bright graphics and stickers, dubbed “Jenny’s Ride,” and features QR codes and links to donation platforms including a JustGiving page.
“We’ve had it sponsored and wrapped professionally,” Pat said. “It’s covered in MND logos and information about how to donate. It’s our moving tribute to Jenny and a way to keep spreading awareness along the route.”
Jenny was diagnosed with stage 4 MND in early 2023. Pat described the disease as “a jackpot you don’t want to win,” detailing how it slowly took away her ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually breathe.
“There are no tablets. No treatments that really help. Life expectancy is often just one to three years.”
“The MND Group supported us through every stage, including monthly meetings, emotional support, connecting with other carers. We wouldn’t have coped without them,” he said.
Pat hopes the ride raises both money and awareness for the disease and the support networks that help those affected.
“It’s not just about those with MND it’s about the carers, too. People need to know about this disease, how horrific it is, and how vital support groups like ours are.”
The eight cyclists have been training for months. Most have no professional cycling experience, but all are motivated by their shared love for Jenny and a desire to help others.
“These people are giving up their time, their work, their summer. It’s not just a physical challenge, it’s an emotional one. But it’s also an adventure.
“It’s deeply humbling how many people have offered support, from local rugby clubs offering showers and beds to strangers cheering us on.”
Pat says the group has already seen support from across the country, particularly in Scotland, where clubs and communities have opened their doors.
“It shows what makes this country great, its people,” Pat added.
Jenny’s Ride will begin in August, covering the iconic length of Britain challenge in two weeks. A support crew will travel in two vehicles alongside the riders, with a base team helping coordinate from Bedford.
