It’s been another successful weekend for the prolific Bedford Ladies Tug of War side, who competed at the British and Irish Tug of War Championships in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, returning home with a bundle of gold medals.

Richhill Tug of War Club at the St Luke’s Hospital Grounds in County Armagh was the latest stage for the women to showcase their skills, with some representing England on the national stage, as well as Bedford sweeping the Open Club Championship.

The action began on Friday (25 July) with the main championship, and with it the streams of gold medals, as Bedford pullers were heavily involved in the England sides that won double international gold.

The 520kg weight class was won on behalf of England by a solely Bedford side, while five Bedford pullers joined the 560kg weight class team to pull their way to gold shortly after.

The team reached this stage courtesy of winning the national championships in Kent in June, and they doubled down on their achievements with gold medals as they dominated the events again.

The gold medals kept coming at the open club competition, where Bedford completed a clean sweep of four first place finishes.

They were winners in every weight class, (500, 520, 540 and 560kg) to complete the perfect weekend for the club who have already tasted national and international success in recent years.

The action for the season does not end in Northern Ireland, as the Bedford Ladies make the short trip to Nottingham to compete for England in the 2025 World Tug of War Championships this September.

They’ll once again represent England in the Ladies 540 Championship, as the largest international competition – which also includes the world junior and under 23 championships – comes to English shores.

The event will be taking place at Nottingham University from 4-7 September, and will include an open club competition with all clubs from home and abroad invited to take part in the open competition.

The World Championships are due to last four days and will welcome approximately 1,500 to 2,000 participants from at least 20 countries.
