The MP for Bedford and Kempston, Mohammad Yasin is among over 43 Labour MPs who have declared their backing for Keir Starmer to become the next leader of the Labour party.
This puts the Shadow Brexit Secretary ahead of the other potential candidates, but the leadership contest has another three months to run.
Commenting on his decision, Mr Yasin said, “There is a strong field of candidates, all of whom would have brought their own talents and energy to the role of Labour leader but for me, Keir Starmer is the outstanding candidate and is the right person to take the Labour Party into the next decade.
“It is clear that Labour needs to listen to communities across the country and learn serious lessons following the General Election result.
“I share Keir’s vision and optimism for Labour’s future.
“I believe he can bring the leadership necessary to rebuild trust and establish Labour as a united force for good so we can win the next election and deliver the credible and radical change needed to tackle the profound injustices and inequality in our economy and society.
“Keir has a fantastic track record, fighting injustice, standing up for the powerless against the powerful. He fought for the miners, print workers and environmental and poll-tax activists.
“He passionately fought to secure justice for Stephen Lawrence and as Head of the Crown Prosecution Service and Director of Public Prosecutions he has long advocated a tough but fair approach on corporations and has a tough approach to crime.
“He will make a formidable opponent to Boris Johnson – Keir’s honesty, integrity, dedication to public service and superb grasp of detail is just what the country needs.”
The other candidates are Clive Lewis, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Jess Philips and Emily Thornberry.
