The nomination window for the Bedford Independent Everyday Heroes Awards has been extended, giving people more time to put forward the community champions who make a real difference in Bedford. Nominations will now close at midnight on Sunday, 16 March 2025.
The awards, run in partnership with The Harpur Trust, celebrate individuals who go above and beyond to help others.
Whether it’s a dedicated volunteer, a kind neighbour, or someone making a lasting impact on the community, these awards recognise their invaluable contributions.

A celebration of community spirit
Now in its latest year, the Everyday Heroes Awards highlight the inspiring stories of those who often go unrecognised.
The Harpur Trust, a long-standing supporter of community initiatives in Bedford, plays a key role in ensuring these awards shine a light on those making a difference.
Julia Course, co-founder of the Bedford Independent, and organiser of the awards, said: “These awards are all about celebrating the people who make Bedford such a special place.
“We’ve already received so many excellent nominations so by extending the deadline, we hope to make sure that as many outstanding individuals as possible receive the recognition they deserve.”
A new award in memory of Laura Pottinger
This year introduces a special new category: the Laura Pottinger Award for Courage. Named in honour of the much-missed community advocate, the award will recognise individuals who have shown exceptional bravery in the face of adversity.

Laura’s impact on Bedford was profound, and this award aims to continue her legacy by acknowledging those who inspire others through their courage.
Laura tragically lost her life in 2023 alongside her close friend, Sarah Waller following a canoeing accident on the River Great Ouse in Kempston.

She was a passionate advocate for young people, playing a pivotal role in launching Bedford Giving, a movement dedicated to empowering local communities through philanthropy and social action.
Awards ceremony
The winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony on Thursday, 1 May 2025, at The Quarry Theatre, hosted by Bedford School. The event will bring together nominees, supporters, and local dignitaries for an evening of recognition and celebration.
Nominations can be submitted online via the Bedford Independent website. With the deadline now extended, there’s still time to make sure the town’s Everyday Heroes get the appreciation they deserve.

This year’s categories include:
- Young Carer of the Year (Heart Academies Trust): Recognising young carers under 18 for their dedication. (2023 winner: Andreea Balan)
- Volunteer of the Year (Harpur Trust): Celebrating those who give their time selflessly. (2023 winner: Akaal Seva)
- Excellence in Education (Bedford School): Honouring teachers, coaches, and educators who inspire and uplift young minds. (2023 winner: Faye McKinney)
- Raising the Profile of Bedford Borough (The Quarry Theatre): For individuals or teams who put Bedford on the map. (New award)
- Pride in Bedford Borough (Bedford Radio): Recognising those who make Bedford a better place to live, work, and play. (New award)
- Young Achiever (up to age 13) – (Maths Circle/Times Tables Rock Stars): For an individual aged 13 or under who has achieved over and above the expected. (2023 winner: Lola Bracey)
- Young Achiever (14-21) (Bedford Heights): Celebrating young people making a significant impact. (2023 winner: Charlie Faulkner)
- Youth Voice (Bedford Giving): A brand-new award recognising young people or organisations advocating for under-18s.
- Fundraiser of the Year – Individual & Team (Woodfines Solicitors & White Hart Press): Rewarding those who have raised funds for a good cause. (2023 winners: Liz Simmonds & David Donnelly’s team)
- Unsung Hero (Brewpoint): For those making a quiet but significant impact. (2023 winner: Christian Coley)
