Bedford Ian has been looking at recent goings on across Bedford Borough and tells us what he thinks of it all…

Nothing’s Free

You’d think the news of free breakfasts for children who need them would be welcome to anyone. But then I forgot about the cold-hearted and ignorant, who felt the need to point out that the breakfasts aren’t free; the taxpayer covers the cost. No sh*t, Sherlock.

So, can we all just agree on something and not bring it up every time there’s a report about a service free at the point of delivery? Nothing provided by any level of government is free.

  • You don’t pay at the point of use for a GP appointment, but you pay for it.
  • You don’t hand over cash for your child’s schooling, but you pay for it.
  • You don’t tap your card when the bins are collected, but you definitely pay for it.

That’s the system.

And yes, some people pay more than others. If you earn more, you contribute more. Until someone comes up with a better idea, that’s the fairest option.

But here’s the bit that seems to get lost in the rush to shout “it’s not free”, as if they’re the only ones being sent a bill for helping to raise society up as a whole.

So what?

If part of what I pay helps ensure a child gets a decent breakfast before school, so they can concentrate, learn properly, and have a better shot at life, that feels like money well spent.

Yes, it’s frustrating when people abuse the system, and let’s hope they all get caught, but helping children start the day properly is not something anyone with a heart should be complaining about.

It’s something to be proud of.

Pub’s open

It was all a bit manic on the news desk this week after a perfectly lovely story about The Bluebell’s manager moving on caused a minor panic.

Not because anything was wrong with the story, but because some readers saw the headline and stopped there. Without reading on, they concluded the pub was closing.

Now, to be fair, headlines do matter. Journalists have a responsibility to be clear and accurate.

But even when they are, they’re not a substitute for actually reading the article.

News, as it turns out, does require more than a glance.

That said, the editorial team here is always happy to listen, especially when it comes to supporting local businesses, so a small tweak to the headline was made to avoid any further confusion.

And in the end, it led to something positive.

A Putnoe positive follow-up story, not originally planned, but one that introduced the two people stepping in to take the pub forward into its next chapter. So, all’s well that ends well.

And a gentle reminder, the full story is usually where it is, so make sure you take it all in.

Mousseless society

There’s nothing quite like family visiting, for whatever reason, and enjoying the company of the people who know you better than anyone else. It’s, of course, important to make them feel welcome and comfortable, and as at home as possible.

So, when my sister-in-law, who’s visiting, said she’d forgotten mousse for her hair, I leapt into action in the only way I know how… and took the dog for a walk to go and find some.

We visited four local shops between us and found plenty of hairspray, enough gel to sculpt a small army of teenage lads, and dry shampoo in abundance.

But no mousse, not a single can.

So, off into town we went instead. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it did feel like a lot of effort for something that used to sit quietly on every shelf next to the Brylcreem.

So, if any independent local community shops are reading this and fancy cornering a very specific, very urgent, hyperlocal market… get some hair mousse on your shelves. You could make quite a few quid out of it.

Strong defence

Working on a news desk that prides itself on accuracy, professionalism, and actually going out to find stories, you get used to others stealing your work.

And yes, I use that word on purpose.

Because while raw facts aren’t protected, the way those facts are written, structured and presented most certainly is. UK copyright law is quite clear on that. Even headlines can be protected.

At the very least, if you’re lifting a story, the decent thing to do is credit the source.

For regulated publications, it’s not just decent, it’s expected, and part of their standards code – which is why if the publication you’re reading isn’t regulated or abiding by its own clear editorial standards, it’s not actually a newspaper, and you could well be receiving stolen goods.

Which makes it all the more entertaining when you see where our work ends up.

This week, the Bedford Independent’s ‘first-to-publish’ story on the departure of Bedford Town manager Lee Bircham somehow found its way onto an Indian defence news website.

A site apparently dedicated to global military updates, defence technology and strategic affairs decided that what its readers really needed was the latest from the National League.

But our Sports Editor, Tom Carr, took it in his stride and quipped, “Well, Lee Bircham is well renowned for his strong defence”.

Banana blunder

A quick parting high-five to the social media team at Bedford Borough Council, who pulled out all the wit they could muster when dealing with another ignoramus.

I’ll leave you to enjoy this piece of banana-related brilliance.
