Bedford Hospital has received confirmation that it is among 78 NHS Trusts to receive new cancer screening machines.

Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Health, today said that Bedford Hospital NHS Trust will receive new funding for two further MRI machines and a CT scanner.

MP for North East Bedfordshire, Alistair Burt said; “I am delighted with this news for my constituents and all those in the area covered by Bedford Hospital.

“This state of the art equipment will ensure many more people will be diagnosed early and really improve survival rates in our area.

“I hope also it will go some way to alleviating the concerns of those who continuously say the hospital is under threat.

“This is good news for Bedford Hospital. We believe in the NHS, we back the NHS, and we are funding the NHS right here in Bedfordshire.”

Bedford and Kempston MP, Mohammad Yasin said, “I’ve been campaigning for better facilities for our hospital since becoming the MP for Bedford and Kempston, and I’m really pleased to hear that Bedford has been earmarked for a new cancer screening machine.

“Bedford hospital needs this investment and more besides, so that it can continue to serve the needs of our growing population.”

Hands off Bedford Hospital campaigner, Jenny Feneley said, “Great news for the hospital and for patients.

“I look forward to further announcements providing more funding for running the hospital, so that the management team don’t have to take measures like massively reducing cleaning hours!

“Capital investment is of course welcome but it doesn’t alleviate the day to day struggles of running an underfunded hospital.”
