SMART, a homeless charity based in Prebend Street, Bedford, has announced that it has raised over £50,000 to help support those facing hardship over the winter months.
The charity has thanked the local community for their donations, which it says have kept hundreds of people in the area safe, fed and warm.
Working with Bedford Council as a partner, SMART has provided over 2,500 meals, shelter, hot showers, warm clothing and vital support to those who are struggling to make ends meet.
SMART has become a lifeline for many, and Deputy CEO Jen Robus said: “We are acutely aware of the impact of homelessness on the lives of the people in Bedford and SMART is committed to helping everyone that needs housing support, whatever their situation.
“No one should have to face the prospect of homelessness or experience poverty, but in Bedford, we have really come together with the council and our partners to help tackle this problem.
“As a result, we’re proud to have helped hundreds of people get back on their feet, with access to the right support.
“Thanks to the incredible support of our community as well as the council and our fantastic charity partners, SMART will continue striving to reach our ultimate goal of ending homelessness in Bedford.”
The need for affordable housing and food banks is on the rise across the UK, and the cost-of-living crisis has pushed many households into poverty.
SMART says that homelessness is a nationwide problem and that local authorities are struggling to tackle the rise in homelessness, particularly since the pandemic.

Despite these challenges, SMART has been successful in reducing the number of rough sleepers in Bedford since 2017.
The charity has become a safe space for those in need, helping to rebuild lives through key local partnerships that provide financial, mental health and well-being support services.
SMART will continue its fundraising efforts to prevent homelessness by joining other local charities at the Bedford Running Festival on 2nd September 2023.
The charity is encouraging runners to join in the fun and raise vital funds by taking part in a 5k, 10k or half marathon on behalf of SMART. For more information or to sign up, visit their website.
