A Christmas-themed barley wine which was the winning beer in the Bedford Homebrewers‘ fifth anniversary brew-off, will be on sale from Friday (15 December) at Brewpoint and Beerfly.

Blazing Puds is the creation of homebrewer Michael Parks and is described as “the perfect combination of winter warmer and Christmassy cheer.”

It triumphed in the fifth-anniversary homebrewers’ ‘one-of-a-kind’ competition, which gave the beer-makers the chance to create any beer, any style, just “make it Christmassy”. The first prize was to see their recipe brewed in collaboration with Brewpoint and released to the public at their taproom and at Beerfly on St Cuthbert’s Street in time for the festive season.

The beers were judged by Tim Edwards of Beerfly and Jon Slate and Paul Newton of Brewpoint.

“Out of the 10 entrants, there was a tight battle between the top three beers, so obviously a second bottle of each was required,” said Tim.

“After much deliberation, the winning beer was the fantastic 9.3% Christmas Pudding Barley Wine brewed by Michael Parks and that very same beer has been recreated by brewer Jon and Michael himself, on Brewpoint’s micro brewkit and rebrewed to perfection.”

The event was a collaboration between Beerfly, Brewpoint and the Bedford Hombrewers, organised by their founder and host of The Hop Addition podcast, Richard Williams.

“We can’t wait to build on this relationship in 2024 and continue to grow the beer scene with great beers, events, brewery tours and beer festivals,” said Tim.

Tasting notes

Not for the Grinches out there, this Christmas Pudding Barley Wine will get you into the festive mood. The beer is full of the flavours of treacle, currants and spice, a boozy belly warmer to settle you in for a cosy night in front of the Christmas tree.

Blazing Puds will be available at both Brewpoint and Beerfly from 5pm on Friday (15 December).
