Across the country, retired clinicians from across the world of healthcare are returning to full-time work in order to help the efforts against Covid-19.

One of these is Dr Richard Norris, a semi-retired doctor who is going from a few shifts per month to five shifts per week in order to help his NHS colleagues.

Dr Norris, 67, is well known in Bedford as he was a GP for many years at the now defunct Lansdowne Road surgery, as well as being a permanent fixture on the 5-a-side football leagues.

As well as this, Dr Norris has been a part of the Great British Medical Football team in the past, and continues to run a side who usually play in the shorter format at Kempston Rovers on Monday nights.

These days he works as an out-of-hours doctor for Herts Urgent Care, based at Bedford Hospital, but is returning to full-time hours as the pressure on the NHS ramps up due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr Norris is one of many former NHS employees returning to work in Bedford, all of whom are risking their health to help their former colleagues as the coronavirus outbreak is reportedly reaching a peak throughout the country.

All of us at the Bedford Independent would like to thank all of the returning NHS staff who are delaying retirements, holidays or other commitments to help fight the cause along with Dr Richard Norris, as well as the current staff at Bedford Hospital who are managing the outbreak.
