Sue Ryder’s Dragon Boat Race made a welcome return to Bedford last weekend with crews going head-to-head as part of the annual fundraiser.

The picturesque  200-metre Bedford Embankment course was the battleground for nine boats aiming for glory, all in support of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger.

Overall the event raised £14,311 for the charity, to allow them to continue doing vital work supporting families across the UK.

This year’s event took place as part of the Bedford Borough Council’s Kite and Motoring Festival, which brought thousands of visitors to the embankment, to enjoy kite displays, classic car exhibitions, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

The Dragon Boat race aims to raise awareness and funds for Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, a charity used by many members of the community who need palliative or end of life care as well as families needing support with bereavement. The charity ensures everyone approaching the end of their life or living with grief can get the support they need, and relies on fundraising from these events to facilitate its vital work.

Spectators lined the riverside to cheer on the teams as they raced, competing for the title of Dragon Boat Champions 2025.  The ASHE Group beat the Green Light Consultancy Group Ltd to claim victory, with just half a second separating the competitors at the finish line.

Thanks to the donations from the local community, the event raised over £14,000 for the Moggerhanger-based hospice.

Other winners from the day included Croudace, who were awarded the title of Top Fundraising Team for raising an impressive £2,050, while Woodfine were named Best Mixed Crew.

The managing director of Croudace North Thames, Karly Williams said: “Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice is an incredible charity… crucially, we raised more than £2,050”

The senior community fundraiser for the hospice said: “A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support us… (it was) lots of fun, with the local community uniting to raise vital funds for a truly worthwhile cause.”
