The Government has awarded Bedford Borough £288K to spend on English language programmes for people who speak English as a foreign language.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses help people achieve a level of English that assists employment opportunities, essential communication skills and access to services.

Conservative Group Leader Cllr Graeme Coombes said: “This additional Government funding should help Bedford Council to sweep away language barriers and open up education and job opportunities, as well as access to essential services. It will support families, their livelihoods and our local economy.

“Afghanistan reminds us that teaching English skills to new arrivals will be an essential part of successfully integrating people to whom English is not their first language. It should help make them part of the community so much faster.”

The money will enable the council to continue the programme it started in 2019 through Ministry of Housing funding.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
