Three defeats in four league fixtures in 2024 have left Bedford Blues fifth in the Championship, and Mike Rayer will hope to mastermind a return to winning ways as his team travel to Merseyside for the second time this season to face Caldy.

In a clash rearranged from December, after the game was postponed at the eleventh hour due to a frozen pitch, Bedford Blues will hope to avenge a last gasp Caldy victory last season as they search for a spot back in the top four.

In what has been a heavy schedule for the Blues in the past month, they will face a fortnight off after Saturday’s encounter and will want to stay hot on the tails of the likes of Ealing and Cornish Pirates, who play each other this weekend in the only other Championship fixture.

Standing in their way are a belligerent Caldy side who have been a breath of fresh air since they won the National One title and beat Bedford Blues 36-28 in this fixture last January.

All change

No doubt with a poor start to the calendar year in mind, Rayer has made eight changes to his starting line up for the fixture at Paton Field.

There is an all new front row as Jamie Jack and Oisin Heffernan return either side of hooker, Jacob Fields who makes his first start since September although he did play all but one minute of last week’s Pirates clash due to an injury to James Fish early on at Goldington Road.

Cameron King also returns in the number eight jersey behind Tom Lockett and Jac Arthur as there are a total of six new faces in the pack.

Michael Le Bourgeois returns after a head injury to slot in alongside Joel Matavesi in the back line to complete a new look Bedford Blues side who could finish the weekend in third, with the only other fixture between the top two sides, Ealing and Cornish Pirates.

The clash kicks off at 14:00 on Saturday on The Wirral, and you can still buy tickets for the game here.
