The Greensand Trust has launched an urgent appeal following a deliberate act of arson that destroyed the boardwalk at Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve.
The fire, which was started in multiple locations, has left the 68-metre wooden structure in ruins, along with new interpretation boards and bins that were recently installed to improve the visitor experience.
The boardwalk, which opened in April, played a crucial role in making the reserve more accessible, offering a shorter and safer route between the lakes and facilitating visitors’ engagement with the site’s rich biodiversity.
Its loss now poses a significant setback to both public access and ongoing conservation efforts.
Gill Welham, Chief Executive of the Greensand Trust, said, “We are devastated to see the boardwalk completely destroyed by a mindless, deliberate act of destruction.”
“Since opening in April, we have been so grateful for the care taken by visitors to help us protect this wonderful site,” He continued.
“We know just how much the Reserve has meant to people, and how much the community, and our staff and volunteers have committed to open the Reserve for everyone to enjoy.
“I hope anyone who hears about this will find ways to support our determination to overcome this challenge and rebuild the 68 meters of boardwalk, which enabled access for all.”
Despite the damage, the nature reserve remains open and the Greensand Trust has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the site, but says public support is vital to its recovery.
The trust has set up a fundraising appeal to help restore the damaged infrastructure.
Donations will be directed towards reconstructing the boardwalk and supporting ongoing work to maintain the site as a habitat for wildlife and the broader community.
