Drivers are being warned of closures on the A1 northbound in Bedfordshire this weekend (Friday, 10 – Monday, 13 October 2025) as work continues on National Highways’ £1 billion Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement scheme.

The closure will allow Anglian Water to connect a new water main near Nags Head Lane, close to the A1 carriageway.

For safety reasons, the A1 northbound between Tempsford and Wyboston will be closed, along with the A421 eastbound between Cardington Interchange and the Black Cat roundabout.

Closures will be in place from 9pm on Friday, 10 October until 5am on Monday, 13 October.

Diversion route

During the closure, traffic will be diverted:

  • Off the A421 at Cardington Interchange onto the A603 towards Sandy
  • From Sandy, north on the A1 to the Tempsford Interchange
  • Exit onto St Neots Road and join the A428 at St Neots
  • Rejoin the A1 northbound at the Wyboston junction

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow signed diversions.

£1bn regional upgrade

National Highways thanked drivers for their patience as work continues on the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet scheme, the organisation’s largest current infrastructure project.

The upgrade aims to improve journeys between Milton Keynes and Cambridge, reduce congestion, and support long-term growth across the region by creating a new dual carriageway between the Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet junction.
