The ever-popular and much-anticipated Christmas Tree Festival is back at St Paul’s church this December and, in honour of this year’s Coronation, the theme is Kings and Queens.

From Wednesday 6 to Sunday 10 December, visitors can enjoy over 60 royal-themed trees decorated by local groups, schools, organisations and businesses, all vying for the coveted ‘best tree’ award.

And organisers are hoping to smash last year’s £20,000 fundraising total.

In keeping with tradition, the 23rd annual event will be officially opened by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Russell Beard and Bedford Pipe Band will lead visitors into the church.

Entertainment comes from over 43 performances across five days, featuring 1,200 individuals from schools, community organisations and dance groups.

The Mayor, Speaker of the Council and the Bishop of Bedford will also be in attendance at the launch when the first of the many local choirs will sing.

On Friday, 8 December, the annual Festival Concert takes place at 7.30pm featuring the return of the Woburn Piano Trio playing festive favourites including Walking in the Air alongside pieces by Haydn and Brahms.

“It is a truly memorable evening for concertgoers to enjoy the beautiful trees at night in the majestic setting of St Paul’s,” said festival chairman, Margaret Oakley.

Let’s make it a record-breaking year…

“We are looking forward to welcoming even more visitors to the festival this year,” said Margaret.

“Help us to raise even more than the £20,000 raised last year which will go equally towards St Paul’s work of worship, welcome and the support of the vulnerable as well as to Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends. This year their efforts are directed to upgrading a new  CT scanner with very fast action to take dynamic X-Ray pictures of the heart’s blood vessels.”

“The Festival requires immense dedication from some 330 volunteers and office staff to ensure that everything runs smoothly.  The Committee is grateful to the Festival’s main sponsor, Jayne Beard Associates and to many other sponsors, businesses and individuals for helping to raise these vital funds.”

The Bedford Christmas Tree Festival takes place at St Paul’s Church in St Paul’s Square from Wednesday 6 December – Sunday 10 December.

Opening times are Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday noon – 4pm. Entry is £3 per person and under 16s are free. Everyone welcome.
