Bedford Borough Labour Group are delighted to congratulate our former councillor colleague Mohammad Yasin on his re-election as MP for Bedford & Kempston, won with a large majority.

It’s great that local people have recognised the hard work of Mohammad and his team and have supported him in such numbers. We’ll continue to work closely with Yasin, our dedicated constituency MP, who is now part of a huge Labour majority in Parliament.

I’m under no illusion that the dreadful austerity and decay inflicted on this country by the Conservatives over the last 14 years can be reversed quickly.

But what a relief to have serious, ethical, professional people forming a government with an intention to serve the people of this country, not their own interests.

The country has felt tired and dispirited – we now have an opportunity to do things differently and look forward with optimism.

I work in the energy industry and will be closely watching and hoping to be involved with a key Labour manifesto promise to create GB Energy.

This is a combination of public and private companies working together to harness opportunities and technology for green energy, committed to reaching net zero.

As a proud Trades Union member and representative, I’m also hugely supportive of Labour’s plan to make work pay. This includes a genuine living wage, banning exploitative zero-hour contracts and ending fire and rehire.

All Labour Group Borough councillors are acutely aware of how difficult life has become for so many of our residents due to this job insecurity and the high costs of housing. This needs to change, and people in all fields of work must be properly rewarded and respected.

The Universal project also has all of our support, it could bring a huge boost to not only our local economy but that of the whole country.

We’ll continue to work with our excellent council officers and other councillors of all parties for this and every project that can benefit and improve life for the residents of Bedford and Kempston.

With a new Labour Government it feels like this kind of grown-up politics is now back nationally too, and long may it last. We’ve had far too much ‘personality politics’ and party in-fighting.

Elected representatives of all political persuasions at all levels of government need to buckle down and deliver for all the people they serve and work to create a better future.
