A Stagsden florist is once again behind one of Bedford town centre’s most recognisable festive landmarks, as the giant Christmas wreath at Silver Street is unveiled for 2025.

Hay Lane Flowers, an independent flower grower and florist based in the village, has created the huge 3.8-metre design which wraps around the Reflections of Bedford statue, known to many as the Silver Faces.

Made from real foliage, including holly, ivy and seasonal decorations, the wreath has been a feature of Bedford’s Christmas celebrations for several years. It has quickly become a visual marker that the festive season has arrived in the town centre.

Festive foliage

Since its debut in 2022, the Silver Faces wreath has become a popular backdrop for photos and meet-ups.

The addition of a bench next to the artwork last year has turned the spot at Silver Square, outside the What’s On Bedford Borough Visitor Information Centre, into one of the town’s busiest festive “selfie” corners.

With thousands of people passing along Silver Street on foot and by car each week, the installation is designed to bring some of that Christmas atmosphere right into the heart of Bedford’s main shopping area.

Elected Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton (Conservative), said the wreath had become part of the town’s seasonal identity.

He said:“We are proud to continue the tradition of the Bedford Christmas wreath, a beautiful display that reflects both the festive cheer and the community pride of our historic market town.

“Thanks to Costa’s generous sponsorship and the skills of Hay Lane Flowers, the wreath not only brightens the heart of Bedford but also brings people together to celebrate the season in a truly special way.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy this iconic festive landmark once again.”

Costa backing

This year’s wreath is sponsored by Costa Coffee Bedford, helping to cover the costs of creating and installing the large, fresh-foliage design.

Vinay Victor, Area Manager for Costa Coffee Bedford, added, “Christmas is all about those little moments that bring us together, and we are proud to support an event that celebrates just that.

“As a long-standing part of the Bedford community, we are delighted to sponsor this year’s Christmas wreath and help make the festivities shine even brighter. It is a wonderful occasion that truly captures the spirit of the season.”

The wreath forms part of a wider package of Christmas activity in Bedford town centre, which began with the Christmas lights switch-on in Harpur Square on 22 November and continues through November and December with events, performances and family activities.

Bedford Borough Council is encouraging residents and visitors to stop by Silver Square, enjoy the display and share their festive photos, as well as explore other events in the town centre.
