A new children’s book, drawing on the authors’ experiences of living with autism and ADHD, is launching this weekend at the Eagle Bookshop in Bedford.
Written and illustrated by Bedfordian Jamie Hammond and John Charlesworth, Monster is the first in a series of books aimed at middle-grade readers from age seven.
Monster tells the story of a young human boy called Eric who is born into a world of monsters. In this world, Eric is called the monster as he is so very different in appearance to not only his peers but his family.
The book touches on subjects such as inclusion, diversity and acceptance of not only others but also yourself. The first in a series, Monster explores how Eric is estranged from the outside world but overcomes his fears with the love of his family.
With a background in both film and television production as well as toy development and design, Jamie and John first began working on the book in 2013, taking inspiration from their own lives and families.
John cares for his autistic brother on a daily basis and Jamie has raised a child with ADHD whilst being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult himself.
Both have seen what it’s like to be deemed different from those around them.
To connect with the young readers of Bedford, Jamie and John have hand delivered a copy of the book to primary schools in the borough.
“The aim of the gifting was never a way to advertise or sell the book but a way in which to get it into the hands of young readers,” explained Jamie.
“There seemed no better way than to give to a school library.
“Over the many calls made to each one of the 50+ schools throughout Bedford the response has been fantastic. Some have asked for personal readings, others have mentioned writing something about the gifting in the school newsletter, although the joy of knowing that children have taken something from the book is more than enough reward at this stage.”
On Saturday (3 December), The Eagle Bookshop on St Peter’s Street will host a book signing and readings by Jamie and John.
The readings will take place at midday and 2pm and there will be additional merchandise available to buy too, including postcards, bookmarks, membership packs and stickers.
