Olympic Gold Medalist, Etienne Stott, in Bedford for Canoe Slalom Interclubs

77

Rain won’t be stopping play as 20 clubs from across the UK come to Bedford for the Canoe Slalom Interclubs Championships at Priory Country Park this weekend.

Organisers say the championships are a massive event in the Canoe slalom calendar, giving clubs the chance to compete against each other, and offer a break from the usual season where they only compete against others in the same division.

The interclubs event has been going since 1985 and racing starts with practice runs this morning (8th September) followed by team and individual races over the weekend!

Each clubs team consists of 13 paddlers one day running as individuals and other in teams of three. Team runs include a team gate where they all have to get through in a set time.

Bedford’s Viking Kayak Club team will feature 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Etienne Stott.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
